In 1895 the Latvian Union of Decorative Painters established the Decorative Painters School. In 1928 – 1944 the School's title was “Vocational School of Latvia's Decorative Painter Trade Promotion and Assistance Society.” From October 1944 to 1946 the School's title was Riga Art Highschool; in February of 1945 the workshop of artist Roberts Tillbergs was incorporated in the school. On March 18, 1946, the school was given the name of Janis Rozentals, a prominent Latvian painter (1866 – 1916). The school's official title from 1946 to 1998 was Janis Rozentals Art Highschool. From 1998 – 2002 the school was reorganized into Janis Rozentals Art College, but in March 18, 2002, renamed again into Janis Rozentals Art Highschool, the name it carries today.

The history of Janis Rozentāls Riga Art High-school goes back to 1895 when the Union of Decorative Painters established a School for Decorative Painters.

From 1928 to 1944 the school’s name was “Vocational School of Latvia’s Decorative Painter Trade Promotion and Assistance Society”; from 1944 to 1946 – the name was Riga Art High-school. On March 18, 1946, the school was given the name of Janis Rozentāls, a prominent Latvian painter (1866 – 1916), so the school’s full title was Janis Rozentāls Riga Art High-school, the name it carries today.

Janis Rozentāls Riga Art High-School provides education in accordance with the regular high school curriculum augmented by classes in drawing, painting, composition, sculpture, photography, computer design, graphic arts and video. After completing the combined three-year high school and art program, students can choose to continue their studies in one of the following specialities:

• Visual art: speciality – Illustrator.
  
  4th year students specialise in painting, graphic arts or sculpture


• Visual communications art: speciality – Multimedia Designer
  
  4th year students specialize in 2D digital design, video art, 3DM digital design, animation or web design.


• Visual communications art: speciality – Fine Art Photographer
  
  4th year students specialize in fine art photography.

Janis Rozentāls Riga Art High-school is an active participant and organiser of various experience exchange programmes, and local as well as international exhibitions. Also is a member of EU associated projects.

Janis Rozentāls Riga Art High-school cooperates with many art high schools in other countries such as: Baltic States, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Italy and Great Britain.

Janis Rozentāls Riga Art High-school is a member of the Eksperimenta! international network and participant in the Comenius project “IDEAlaboratory: how to integrate contemporary art and art education”.
