Elżbieta Gawlikowska-Łabęcka

Artist and teacher, professor of graphics at the Academy of Humanities and Economics in Łódź, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. Initially, she created spatial works, combining different plastic disciplines. In such works as “Obraz przestrzenny” (Spatial Picture), or “Teatr – słowa czytane w przestrzeni” (Theatre – Words Read in the Space), she emphasises the problem of relations between plain and space, object and symbol. She shows great artistic awareness, feel for abstract forms, as well as a touch of poetry. Since the 80-ties, she has been focused on graphics mainly, using her previous experience. As she claims: “I keep emphasizing the importance of dividing points, which is especially clear in my latest graphics, where I create forms made solely of dividing points, which are points of contact at the same time. Verging is the basis, but it is also the means and the aim of my substantive and formal quests and solutions”. In her latest series of graphics the artist uses sharp, saturated colours and an abstract language of forms. They are characterised by clear concept, precision, and methodical attitude. Verging, mentioned by the artist, is manifold here. Colourful surfaces, clearly separated from each other, are followed by melting colours with no dividing point. They mark boundaries between geometrical forms (square, rectangle, circle, triangle), and by sophisticated means constitute boundaries between the plain and the spatial.
